The Manchester United great believes the Sunderland manager is the best homegrown candidate to replace Roy Hodgson as Three Lions boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes Sam Allardyce is the "obvious" domestic candidate to succeed Roy Hodgson as England manager. A narrow 2-1 win over Wales was the only highlight for England in a poor Euro 2016 campaign that ended with a shock loss to Iceland in the round of 16, prompting Hodgson to step down. Former Manchester United manager Ferguson feels the Football Association should not limit itself to another home-grown appointment as they search for a replacement. But if they do, the Scot claimed Allardyce - who enhanced his reputation further by keeping Sunderland safe from relegation last season - will be the frontrunner. The former Barcelona star has moved to Middlesbrough after an unsuccessful stint with Manchester United. Middlesbrough has completed the signing of goalkeeper Victor Valdes after the Spain international left Manchester United. The former Barcelona man has signed a two-year contract with the newly-promoted side and becomes the club's fifth summer signing. Valdes departed United after making just two appearances for the club under Louis van Gaal, having had a public falling-out with the Dutchman. Valdes was accused of refusing to play for the club's Under-21 side by Van Gaal, a claim he strenuously denied. He eventually made three appearances for the youth squad.
