Man Utd squad good enough to win Premier League - Lingard
The Red Devils are eight points off the pace in the Premier League, but the England international is confident they can develop as a team and challenge for the title
Jesse Lingard is confident that Manchester United can win the Premier League this season.
After winning the title in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2013, the Red Devils have been unable to challenge domestically or in Europe, finishing seventh the following season before fourth and fifth place finishes under Louis van Gaal.
Now with Jose Mourinho in charge, United are looking to get back to the top of English and European football, having recruited the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan over the summer.
However, they have been struggling of late, as they sit sixth in the table, eight points behind league leaders Liverpool, while they have won just one of their last five games in the competition.
Lingard, though, is not concerned at this point and believes that once the team and new players get used to each other, they will be able to compete with the rest of the main title contenders.
"The players that have come in can help a lot,” he told the club’s official website. “We're still getting to know each other better, to learn off each other week in, week out.
“But with the four signings we've made, I think we have a strong enough squad to win the league this season."
Poor performances from Pogba in the wake of his signing for a world record fee from Juventus has prompted a lot of criticism for the France midfielder.
But Lingard is convinced by his talent, having seen enough of it when they were in the United U18 team together in 2011, before Pogba left for free to move to Italy.
"When we won the FA Youth Cup, he was consistent all through the rounds, playing very well," he added.
"He made our team more stable, sitting in front of the back four and dictating the play. He went on to win trophies [with Juventus] and obviously he's looking to win more with United now he's back.
"I think he's got a range of passing and the vision to see a pass. He's strong - it's so hard to get the ball off him - and he's still developing."
As well as a talented midfielder, the England international is also a fan of Pogba’s sense of humour.
He explained: "He's a joker in the changing room, always dancing and trying to make you laugh. We have a good bunch of lads, with good team spirit, and I think that can take us to the top this season."
